For students going to a Secondary School

What happens to all the work in my Drive, and what happens to my blog and my Chromebook, when I move from a primary school to a secondary school?

STUDENTS GOING TO A TOKI POUNAMU SECONDARY SCHOOL:

What happens to my blog?

You don't get a new blog when you go to a Toki Pounamu secondary school, your blog just continues, as does 'Learn Create Share', and using Chromebooks. This means that your new teachers can get to know you as a learner much more quickly than they would otherwise, and you can look back on your learning journey and see how much you've grown and developed over many years. You'll post and comment in new ways suited to secondary school. Your blog will be changed over to your secondary school, and you'll be invited to author your blog with your new email address. You'll be supported to accept this invitation in the first few weeks at your secondary school. Your blog will stay under the admin control of your primary school and your primary school teacher until then.

What happens to my primary school Drive?

  • You can archive it with Google Takeout - see further down this page for information.
  • At the end of term one of the next year, you will no longer have access to your primary school account. It'll be archived at your old primary school - it never gets deleted, just suspended, so you can no longer access it. If you need to access it after this time, you can - you'll need to ask at your old primary school. So, you have a term into your first year at your secondary school the next year, to get yourself sorted, especially if you've used your school email to sign up for anything (like social media accounts and online games).

What happens to my Chromebook?

Within the first week or so at your Toki Pounamu secondary school, the Fusion techies will unlink your Chromebook from your old primary school network (this is called 'deprovisioning'), then straight away link it to your secondary school network (called 'provisioning'). PLEASE TAKE YOUR CHROMEBOOK TO SCHOOL FROM DAY ONE.

You will get a new school account and password at your secondary school to use. This is a Google account with Drive and gmail, and works exactly the same as your primary school account did.

If your family is still paying off your Chromebook - all good! Payments just carry on as usual, to the Toki Pounamu Education Trust. You don't need to do anything.

NOTE:

YOU NEED TO UPLOAD INTO YOUR DRIVE ANYTHING IN YOUR DOWNLOADS FOLDER THAT YOU WANT TO KEEP - THE 'DEPROVISIONING' PROCESS WILL DELETE YOUR DOWNLOADS FOLDER.

IF YOU HAVE BOOKMARKS YOU WANT TO KEEP, MAKE A NOTE OF THESE, AS YOU'LL NEED TO ADD THEM TO YOUR NEW SECONDARY SCHOOL ACCOUNT BOOKMARK BAR.

GOOGLE TAKEOUT

STUDENTS NOT GOING TO A TOKI POUNAMU SECONDARY SCHOOL:

What happens to my blog?

You blog settings will be changed so that no-one can comment on your blog anymore - it becomes like a book or a diary, a record of your learning that you can keep. Your school will stay an owner of your blog, so that at any time in the future, you can have the blog transferred to you.

If you are old enough, you can set up a personal Google account to transfer your blog to: Invite your personal Gmail account to be an admin on your blog. Do this before leaving your primary school so that your teacher can help you. Once you've set your personal gmail as an admin on your account, you can delete the your school account, the school blog admin, and your teacher, from your blog. Now it's all yours to take care of.

What happens to my primary school Drive?

At the end of term one of the next year, you will no longer have access to your primary school account.

If you want to make a copy of your Drive contents, you'll need to do a GOOGLE TAKEOUT. This is a way of archiving all of the work from your primary school Drive, and transferring this archive file to your personal Drive (see the Takeout notes above). If you are old enough, you can set up a personal Google account to transfer your Takeout archive folder to. Your parent/s can also transfer your Takeout archive folder to their Google account, if you aren't old enough.

NOTE: If you have lots of video files in your Drive, the Takeout process may not be good enough to save everything (there is a file size limit). Your account wont end up deleted, you'll still be able to arrange with your primary school to access it if you need to, after term one of the next year.

What happens to my Chromebook?

Make sure your teacher/school knows you aren't going to a Toki Pounamu secondary school, so that they can arrange for a Fusion techie unhook (deprovision) your Chromebook from your primary school network before you finish school. Once this is done, you can use your Chromebook at any secondary school that uses devices, and you can use it at home however you choose.

The Chromebook must be paid for in full before it will be unhooked from your primary school.

YOU NEED TO UPLOAD INTO YOUR DRIVE ANYTHING IN YOUR DOWNLOADS FOLDER THAT YOU WANT TO KEEP. UNHOOKING (DEPROVISIONING) WILL DELETE THE CONTENTS OF YOUR DOWNLOADS FOLDER.

ONCE YOUR CHROMEBOOK IS UNHOOKED, follow the instructions on the document below, so that you can use it freely:

Deprovissioning of Chromebook
